Implementing a plan allows for a comprehensive review process to get all staff on the same page
With the focus on meeting compliance deadlines, the benefits of completing the process can be overlooked. The planning department at Rocky View County used the process to conduct a thorough review of existing documents and educate the team on the evolution of planning in the county.
Rocky View County is located in the South Saskatchewan region, just north of the City of Calgary. Using a review matrix, the planning team reviewed all planning documents to ensure they meet the requirements of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan and if the documents requires any changes.
“There have been multiple benefits that were not part of the initial intent,” said Jessica Anderson, a municipal planner with the county.
Both experienced and newer staff had to “jump into these documents and understand the overlay of policy.”
By reviewing all documents within a finite period, the Rocky View planning services department looked at every document through the same lens and identified documents that could benefit from further review, cleaning up and suggesting potential revisions to improve relevancy to the county’s current issues and approaches. Although time consuming, this deliberate process highlights opportunities for change and streamlines ongoing procedures to ensure future documents are prepared with the same lens.
