Backgrounder on: “Land use tools as part of long-term strategy for local development: possibilities for contextual learning”

Alberta Land Institute

Research by the Alberta Land Institute aims to understand how land use planning tools can contribute to better development strategies for rural municipalities. By reviewing land use tools, governance structures and various strategies for municipal development in eight communities, researchers are considering the link between strategy and long-term outcomes.

The eight municipalities that participated in the research were:

  1. Banff
  2. Crownest Pass
  3. Flagstaff County
  4. Jasper
  5. Grimshaw
  6. Grande Cache
  7. St Isidore
  8. Strathcona County

The backgrounder collects the research methods and initial finding of the key factors that enable strategic development practices. Further research will contribute to a guide for municipalities to craft development strategies.
