This national database for disasters includes information on more than 1,000 disasters since 1900. The criteria for a major disaster includes:

  • 10 or more fatalities; 100 or more people affected
  • Appeal for assistance
  • Historic significance
  • Significant impact to normal processes

The types of disasters listed include:

  1. Natural (biological, meteorological, geological)
  2. Conflict (arson, incident, hijacking, terrorist)
  3. Technological (fire, hazardous chemicals, transportation incidents, explosions)

Disasters can be filtered by region, time period, type and impacts (using a normalization of the consumer price index).
