A 2021 study by researchers at the University of Lethbridge explored the relationship between Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils (WPACs) and municipalities.
The researchers reviewed the impact of WPAC projects on municipal watershed planning in four watersheds: Milk River, Oldman, North Saskatchewan and Battle River. They surveyed municipalities and talked to watershed planners from the WPACs.
Although there is a high degree of awareness of the initiatives that WPACs are doing, municipalities expressed interest in improving communications to better leverage WPACs’ research and project. There is an opportunity to enhance the efforts of WPACs through municipal watershed management.
