As communities grow, there is more need for clean water. Increasingly, municipalities are looking to use stormwater and wastewater as a resource and way to conserve fresh water supplies. Here are resources to guide the reuse wastewater and stormwater use in Alberta’s communities.
Public health guidelines for water reuse and stormwater use
Alberta Health
January 2021
Reusing wastewater or using stormwater for non-potable end uses can be done in a way that poses minimal risks to the environment. Alberta Health prepared an overview and explanation on how public health risks can be assessed when reviewing water reuse projects. The focus is on health guidelines related to water reuse and stormwater use.

Water & Resource Recovery Lab
University of Alberta
As a project based out of the University of Alberta, the Water & Resource Recovery Lab provides information, resource, public engagement and policy implementation roadmaps for water reuse and resource recovery systems. The project focuses on wastewater reuse, stormwater use and rainwater use.
Water Reuse in Alberta: Case Studies and Policy Development to Support Economic Development
Alberta WaterSMART
February 2015
To support municipalities in decisions related to water reuse and the use of stormwater, this report includes case studies and a pathway to policy development. It was prepared by WaterSMART solutions for Alberta Innovates in 2015. It defines water reuse and stormwater use, clarifies how was flow and use is measured, connects metrics of reuse to water flow, and provides three case studies to explore the challenges of potential policy or guidelines for decision makers.

Interim guidance to authorize reuse of municipal and industrial wastewater
Alberta Environment and Parks & the Alberta Energy Regulator
August 2015
In response to increased demands for hydraulic fracturing and other secondary uses, AEP (Alberta Environment and Parks) has signalled that it will consider wastewater reuse as a water supply option during development of an alternative policy. Since this source of water may be preferable in comparison with potable sources of water, the interim guidelines assist municipalities and other governments in water reuse decisions.
