Status Report 2019: Implementing Agricultural Strategies in the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan – https://open.alberta.ca/
The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan includes 122 strategies to support eight outcomes:
- Growing and diversified economy
- Air quality supports healthy ecosystems and human needs
- Biodiversity is sustained
- Watersheds supports healthy ecosystems and human needs
- Land is used efficiently
- Quality of life is increased
- Indigenous peoples are includes in land use planning
- Collaborative and community focused decision making
Out of the 122 strategies, there are 12 that are related to agricultural use in the South Saskatchewan region. Every year, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry reviews the implementation of these 12 strategies:
- Strategy 1.1: Maintain a viable agricultural land base by reducing the fragmentation and conversion of agricultural land
- Strategy 1.2: Support a diverse and innovative irrigated agriculture and agri-food sector
- Strategy 1.3: Assist the agriculture and agri-food industry to maximize opportunities for value-added agricultural products
- Strategy 1.4: Support a business climate and complementary production and marketing approaches that recognize the contribution of local production in addition to existing domestic and international market opportunities
- Strategy 1.5: Support and enhance the next generation of agricultural, food and rural entrepreneurs
- Strategy 1.6: Encourage the use of voluntary market-based instruments for ecosystem services in order to recognize and reward the continued stewardship and conservation of private agricultural land
- Strategy 1.9 and 1.10: Ensure policies are in place to promote and remove barriers to new investments in renewable energy production, and invest in the development, demonstration and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies
- Strategy 3.15: Encourage and support the continued stewardship of Alberta’s private lands through the development and piloting of regionally appropriate conservation tools
- Strategy 3.16: Complete development and evaluation of the Southeast Alberta Conservation Offset Pilot by the end of 2015
- Strategy 3.17: Develop and facilitate the continued voluntary adoption of beneficial management practices
- Strategy 4.10: Continue to develop an optimized water management system in the region.
