The Aquifer Vulnerability Index reviews how susceptible Alberta’s aquifers are to contaminants from the surface. Depending on the depth of the aquifer and the geological materials between the surface and the aquifer, the is a vast difference in the susceptibility to contamination among the province’s underground water reservoirs.
The index considers low risk as a potential for contamination from surface contaminants over a period of thousands of years. High risk aquifers risk contamination over a period of tens of years.
